  • Nepalese Visa

    Immigration Office, TIA (Tribhuvan International Airport) under the Department of Immigration has been facilitating tourists flying to Nepal by providing visas on Arrival. To obtain a visa upon arrival by air in Nepal you must fill in an application form and provide a passport copy. Visa application forms are available at the arrival hall, though some airlines provide this form on the flight. There are now visa registration machines in the immigration hall for people with electronic passports, which will automatically fill out the visa form for you after inserting your passport or you can get a visa from Nepalese Diplomatic Missions stationed in your own country before your arrival.

    Nationals of the following countries are requested to acquire visas before they arrive from their nearby Diplomatic missions (Embassies/consulates) of the Nepal Government:

    • Nigeria
    • Ghana
    • Zimbabwe
    • Swaziland
    • Cameroon
    • Somalia
    • Liberia
    • Ethopia
    • Iraq
    • Palestine
    • Afghanistan
    • Syria
    • Refugees with a travel document
      Required Documents:
    • A valid passport (must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry).
    • A passport-sized photo (while available at the airport, bringing one can speed up the process).
    • Cash in USD, Euros, or other widely accepted currencies to pay for the visa.
      Process
    • Fill out the visa application form at the kiosks upon arrival or online before your trip.
    • Pay the visa fee at the payment counter.
    • Submit the form, payment receipt, and passport at the immigration counter.
      Visa Before Arrival (Embassy)
    • Tourists can also obtain a visa from the Nepali embassy or consulate in their home country before arriving.
      On Arrival Visa Fee at Entry Points
    • 15 Days - 30 USD
    • 30 Days - 50 USD
    • 90 Days - 125 USD
      Visa Extension Fee
    • Tourist visa extension is done for a minimum of 15 days with USD 45 and USD 3 per day for additional days.
    • In the case of a delay of fewer than 150 days additional USD 5 per day is a late fine.
      Gratis Visa (Visa for Free)

      Gratis Visa is issued free of cost in the case of the following categories of Visa applicants:

    • Children below 10 years except for US citizens
    • Up to 30 days for SAARC Citizens (except Afghanistan) visiting Nepal for the first time in a given visa year. Afghan citizens are eligible for a Gratis Visa on Arrival only upon the recommendation of the Department of Immigration. If you are an Afghan citizen, you can request a concerned institution inviting you to Nepal for necessary paperwork with the Department of Immigration to get you a Gratis Visa on Arrival.
    • Non-Residential Nepalese (NRN) card holder (issued by MoFA /Nepalese diplomatic missions abroad)
    • Chinese Nationals
    • Officials from China, Brazil, Russia, and Thailand do not need Entry Visas based on a reciprocal visa waiver agreement.

      Special Considerations
    • Transit Visa: For stays of less than 24 hours, a free transit visa is available if proof of onward travel can be provided.
      Other General Information
    • Entering Nepal or staying in Nepal without a valid visa is illegal
    • Tourist visa can be obtained either through the Nepalese embassy or consulate or other mission offices in your nation or at the immigration entry points in Nepal mention above.
    • Visa once issued cannot be amended and the visa fees are non-refundable.
    • You need to pay the visa fees in cash. Credit card or cheque is not acceptable.
    • Visa charges are not applicable to children under 10 years of age; however, they must obtain a valid visa.
    • If you are obtaining a new passport or travel document, you are able to contact advisor of the Immigration Department for the document transfer.
    • Always carry your passport and trekking permit while on trekking.
    • Some of the areas are restricted for filming. Therefore, be careful not to do the activities that are strictly prohibited.
    • The culture, tradition, and sentiments of Nepalese people should be respected. Do not perform any activities that would hurt their sentiments.
    • Do not perform any activities that would lead to moral turpitude.
  • Trekking Permit (Visa and Permit fees)

    Trekkers in Nepal are allowed to trek as FIT (Free Individual Trekker) or in a group of various sizes. However, there are certain trekking regions known as ‘Restricted Areas’ that are highly regulated by the Government of Nepal and hence FITs are strictly forbidden. Trekkers must have a special permit issued by the Department of Immigration for trekking in restricted areas and other trekking permits for the rest of the regions from authorized associations controlled and supervised by the government.

    Trekkers are required to trek only in the specified or designated route as per the Trekking Permit. They are not allowed to change routes or the concerned trekking agency/trekking guide accompanying the group must not let trekkers change the route. Mountaineers with expedition permits should get trekking permits as well if they must pass through restricted areas to climb peaks.

  • National Park / Conservation Areas Project Permits

    Most of the trekking regions in Nepal are located either inside national parks or conservation areas. Trekkers are required to obtain these permits for most of the trekking trails in Nepal. FITs are allowed to trek inside the national parks or conservation areas. To obtain a trekking permit for these regions you need to fill up a form and submit it with a copy of your passport and passport size photo attached at the Nepal Tourism Board Office. This permit is issued by Nepal Tourism Board for trekking in Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu, Mustang, and Rolwaling regions are some of the notable regions where you will need this permit.

    • Permit Cost:
      • NPR 3,390 for National Park Permit
      • NPR 3,000 for Conservation Area Permit per Trekker
  • Trekking Information Management System (TIMS)

    Trekkers Information Management System or in short TIMS is a permit implemented jointly by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN). TIMS is implemented to ensure trekkers’ safety and security and control illegal trekking. This permit is required in all trekking regions of Nepal apart from the controlled area, where you will need a special permit. Group trekkers will have to obtain Blue TIMS cards by paying a fee of Rs 1,000 per person, while Free Individual Trekkers (FITs) must get Green TIMS cards by paying a fee of Rs 2,000. Similarly, group trekkers from SAARC countries must pay Rs 300 for TIMS cards, while FITs from the SAARC region have to pay Rs 600 each.

    Although most of the trekking regions in Nepal require a TIMS permit, the permit is only valid for the trekking area/route as mentioned in the permit.

  • Rural Municipality Fees

    A few rural municipalities have implemented that trekkers who are trekking inside these areas need a permit. These permits are issued at the starting point of the trek.

    • Where to get it:You can obtain this permit at the check post of the Rural Municipalities, such as Lukla, in the Everest region.
